“Many thought it was just a simple backache—but when the MRI results came back, a terrifying condition was discovered that was slowly destroying his body.
Why did he suddenly lose the ability to stand and what happened inside the hospital that has his family worried?

For over four decades, Pen Medina has been recognized as one of the best and most respected actors in the Philippine film and television industry.
With his acting skills, he has been able to bring to life a variety of characters—from kind fathers to villains that audiences fear.
But behind his successful career, he went through a severe ordeal that almost completely put a stop to his normal life.
Many were surprised when news broke in 2022 that Pen Medina could barely stand due to a serious spinal condition.
The once-active actor, accustomed to working long hours on set, was suddenly bedridden and experiencing severe pain throughout his body.
For his family, this was a very painful period.
Pen Medina, born Crispin Parungao Medina Sr.
on August 27, 1950 in Pampanga, has long been considered a pillar of the Philippine entertainment industry.
Before he rose to fame in film and television, he first honed his talent in theater.
On the stages of various theater groups, he learned the discipline, dedication, and depth of acting that later became the foundation of his successful career.
Because of his unique talent, he was quickly noticed by directors and producers.
One of his most important projects was the classic film “Himala” in 1982, starring Nora Aunor.
From there, his film and television projects followed one after another.
He was also part of many acclaimed films such as “Sister Stella L.,” “Orapronobis,” “Jose Rizal,” and “Muro-Ami.” On television, many will never forget his performance as King Hagorn in the fantasy series “Encantadia,” a character who is still considered one of the best villains in the history of Philippine television.
But as his success in showbiz continued, an unexpected health problem gradually began to challenge him.
In mid-2022, Pen Medina began to experience severe back pain.
At first, they thought it was just a normal ache that could be treated with medication and rest.

But as the days passed, his condition worsened.
He can no longer sit properly.
He also has difficulty standing and walking.
It even got to the point where he could barely get out of bed because of the extreme pain.
Because of this, he was rushed to the hospital to undergo various tesTS.
After an MRI and other medical examinations, doctors discovered that he had Degenerative Disc Disease or DDD.
Degenerative Disc Disease is a condition in which the discs that serve as cushions between the bones in the spine gradually thin and deteriorate.
When it worsens, it can cause severe pain, limited movement, and even nerve compression.
In Pen Medina’s case, he even had a pinched nerve which further aggravated the suffering he was experiencing.
According to his family, he was barely able to move normally during that time.
Due to the actor’s serious condition, his children were forced to seek help from the public.
They launched a fundraising campaign and also asked for prayers from his fans and friends in the industry.
Support immediately poured in from various showbiz personalities and ordinary Filipinos who have long admired his talent.
Despite all the trials, Pen Medina did not give up.
In July 2022, he successfully underwent spinal surgery.
Although the surgery was successful, his fight was not over.
He had to stay in the hospital for almost two months to ensure his recovery.
He underwent physical therapy, rehabilitation, and other medical procedures to restore his strength.

Slowly, his condition began to improve.
According to his family, the spinal repair was successful and helped him regain his ability to move more smoothly.
By 2023, a major change in his situation was clear.
He was gradually able to walk again.
He was able to move more comfortably and had a more positive outlook on life after the severe ordeal he had gone through.
But beyond his physical recovery, it seems his outlook on life has become more meaningful.
Instead of focusing solely on acting, Pen Medina returned to his other great passion—painting.
In 2024, he successfully opened his first solo art exhibition featuring his works.
Many were impressed not only by his talent as an actor but also as a visual artist.
For many, this is a symbol of his resurgence.
It wasn’t long before he returned to television with a few special appearances.
One of his notable projects was his appearance in the series “FPJ’s Batang Quiapo,” which once again showed the public that his acting skills are still intact.
Despite his age and the health problems he has endured, he remains an inspiration to many Filipinos.
His story is proof that no matter how difficult the trial, there is still hope to recover if there is determination, family support, and faith in God.
Today, he is in much better shape than when he was unable to stand due to severe illness.
Although he still needs to take care of his health, he continues to be active in the arts and in the things that bring him joy.
From being bedridden to getting back on his feet and facing life with hope, Pen Medina’s fight has been truly remarkable.
And for his fans, only one thing is clear: a true legend doesn’t just give up.
