As the year 2024 begins, crimes are happening one after another in Cebu. Our story today is hotly debated and the content of this news is the unacceptable death of a young woman in Cebu a few days ago and what is even more shocking is the culprit himself. He is the cousin and considered a close friend of the victim.

At first glance, you will see a gentle face, smart, and full of dreams. If you look at her pictures on her social media, she has many friends, a kind daughter, and a loving brother, according to Joselyn’s parents.

On January 14, 2024 at nine o’clock in the evening, Gabe said goodbye to his daughter Joselyn and her brother with their cousin Jimboy to go to… It was a disco held as part of a barangay festival in another barangay in Anopog and because he had companions, he allowed the two children to go without knowing that this would be the last time he would see Joselyn alive as the night wore on. Only his brother made it home. According to him, he and Joselyn parted ways on a motorcycle and the next day the sun rose but Joselyn did not return to them. Her mother thought that maybe she had slept at her grandfather’s house. That’s how worried she was. She did not sleep there. They tried to call her cellphone but they could not contact her. They also asked some of the girl’s friends who were with her at the disco but they all said that they did not know where she was, even Joselyn’s boyfriend did not see her. Because of this, they were forced to go to the Barangay hall to ask for help in the search.

On January 15, 2024 at around 11:00 PM, the police received a call regarding the discovery of a woman’s body in a canal in the subdistrict of Cacao in Barangay Cuga, which is still under the jurisdiction of the town of Pinamugahan. When they went to the area, they found the victim in a miserable condition, covered with dry banana leaves. They found bruises and strangulation marks on her neck. Therefore, they considered this a case of murder. The victim was identified as the missing young woman Joselyn Sillon Capareda.

During the police investigation, they learned that the last person the victim was with when he left the disco was his cousin, 18-year-old Jimboy Pasakan. When they went to his house, they found that he was no longer there and they went to his father’s house in a remote area in Barangay Bituon, Dumanjug town, where he was arrested. Upon his arrest, Jimboy Pasakan did not resist the police and also voluntarily gave his extrajudicial confession. According to Pasakan, Joselyn was his ex-girlfriend and their relationship only lasted three weeks because they decided to break up when they found out that they were cousins. Despite this, they remained close to each other and he ate at the victim’s house for a few days. According to him, they drank alcohol while talking about the motorcycle, but since the road was bumpy and rocky, they decided to just get off and walk home.

According to Pasakan, he invited Joselyn to have sex with him, but she rejected him and threatened to,  "Sisigaw ako kapag ipinagpatuloy mo ang plano." According to him, he punched her three times in the stomach, until she lost consciousness and did what he wanted. According to him, he strangled the victim until she died out of fear that she would report him, before throwing her into a canal, covering her with dry banana leaves, and leaving her.

In an interview, he apologized to Joselyn’s family for what he did, but the family is still angry because they can’t believe that someone they trusted, considered family, and like a real child, would do this. According to mother Gemma, "Walang ginawa si Pasakan sa aking anak, at hiling ko na mabulok siya sa kulungan."

On January 16, 2024, despite the suspect’s confession, Joselyn’s body was brought to the Regional PNP Forensic Unit for an autopsy. This is to determine if she was indeed raped, and if it is proven, Jimboy Pasakan will be charged with murder and rape. The police officers of Regional Office 7 were commended for their quick arrest. Another dream was shattered just because of violence. I hope the family gets justice for their peace of mind, and I hope no more young people will be victims of this type of criminals.
