Chiefs Expect Mansoor Delane To Be Ready For Training Camp After Shoulder Injury
The Kansas City Chiefs appear to have avoided a major injury scare with first-round rookie cornerback Mansoor Delane.
After participating in OTAs earlier in the offseason, Delane did not take part in minicamp because of a shoulder injury.
Head coach Andy Reid said the issue should not keep him out of training camp, which is an important development for a reshaped Chiefs secondary.
Delane’s absence from minicamp naturally created some concern because of how important he is expected to be immediately.
The Chiefs traded up to select him sixth overall, making him one of the central pieces of their defensive retooling.
For a rookie projected to start right away, every missed practice rep matters.
Reid explained that Delane was dealing with a shoulder injury during the final practices of the spring.
According to ESPN’s Nate Taylor, Reid said that injury was the reason Delane was held out.
The encouraging part is that Reid also indicated Delane should be fully healed by the start of training camp.
That timeline is critical for Kansas City.
Training camp is when the rookie’s development will truly accelerate because padded practices create a much more realistic evaluation environment.
If Delane is on the field from the beginning, the Chiefs can continue building the secondary around him without a major delay.
Kansas City’s cornerback room looks very different than it did a year ago.
Trent McDuffie is gone after being traded, while Jaylen Watson left in free agency.
Those departures made cornerback one of the team’s clearest needs entering the draft.
That is why the Chiefs’ aggressive move for Delane made sense.
Kansas City did not wait for the board to fall to them, instead trading up to sixth overall to jump ahead of New Orleans.
The move showed just how highly Brett Veach and the coaching staff valued Delane as a long-term answer.
Delane was widely viewed as the top cornerback prospect in the draft.
His rise was strengthened by a standout 2025 season at LSU, where he showed the length, coverage instincts and ball skills teams covet.
The Chiefs clearly believed he had the profile to replace lost talent and become a foundation piece.
In his lone season with the Tigers, Delane recorded two interceptions, 11 pass deflections and 45 tackles.
Those numbers reflected his ability to challenge throws, finish plays and remain active in coverage.
His performance also earned him All-American honors, further cementing his status as an elite prospect.
The expectations in Kansas City will be immediate.
Delane is not being brought along as a luxury pick or a developmental backup.
Barring setbacks, he is expected to operate as a full-time starter from the beginning of his rookie season.
That kind of responsibility is not easy for a young cornerback.
NFL offenses will test rookies early, especially when they know a defense has undergone major personnel changes.

Even if Sneed is not the same player he once was, his presence can help stabilize a young room.
The Chiefs also need Delane healthy because the secondary has little room for early disruption.

Delane being ready for camp gives defensive coordinator Steve Spagnuolo a better chance to install roles early.
