Few know that behind his familiar, fiery image on the sidelines, Coach Yeng Guiao has been quietly suffering from a health problem that he has long refused to reveal.
As symptoms gradually emerge, many have begun to understand the real reason — what drove him to keep it a secret until now?
Joseer Yengiao was born on March 19, 1959 in a respectable [music] family in the province of Pampanga.
His family has deep roots in the province of Pampanga and his father, [music] Brendiao, was a prominent politician who served as governor of the said province.

Before Yengo became a legendary coach in the Philippine Basketball Association, he lived the ordinary life of a professional [music] outside of sporTS. After his studies at the University of the Philippines, [music] he put his knowledge of industrial engineering to use by working in the corporate sector.
He became part of RFM Corporation, a large food company in the Philippines owned by the [music] Konsumi family.
In this company, he held positions related to production and management [music] where his logical thinking and ability to organize systems were greatly utilized.
This experience in the corporate world gave him a foundation in how to properly manage people, develop effective strategies, and deal with intense pressure.
Qualities that later proved useful when he moved into the coaching profession.

He first competed in amateur leagues, particularly the Philippine Amateur Basketball League where he coached the Swift team.
During this time, he had the opportunity to mentor young talents who later became stars of the country.
Basketball legend Alvin Patrimonio was among those who decided to franchise RFM Corporation to enter the Philippine Basketball Association in 1990 as Pop Cola.
Yengiao was appointed the team’s first head coach in 1991 under the name Diet SARC.
He led his team to their first-ever finals appearance in the All Filipino Conference although they lost to Pure Foods.
His first championship came in the 1992 third conference when he guided the Swift Mighty Miti to a dominant four-game winning streak against Seven Up.

As a legislator, he promoted bills related to sports and the welfare of athletes.

At this stage in his life, Yengiao is facing a major challenge that has nothing to do with the game of basketball but with his personal health.
In April of this year, the veteran coach publicly shared that he suffers from severe chronic lower back pain and sciatica.
This medical condition is caused by a pinched nerve between his L4 and L5 vertebrae in the lumbar spine.
Due to the pinched nerve, he experiences severe pain, numbness, and weakness that radiates from his lower back down his legs, severely limiting his movement on the court.
According to his statements, he had long tried to avoid surgery by undergoing alternative methods such as physical therapy, traction and decompression therapy to relieve the pain.
However, due to the worsening situation and the uncertainty of physical therapy, he postponed his plan to undergo a scheduled back surgery in April 2026.
He planned to have the surgery immediately after Reynor Shine’s PBA 50th Season Commissioners Cup campaign to avoid disrupting the team’s preparations.
In mid-June 2026, he gave an additional update that his attraction treatments were still ongoing and he may undergo spine injections to continue to cope with the pain before the actual surgery, which is expected to require a 48-hour hospital stay.
As of June 2026, Yengew remains active and stable as the head coach of the ROR Shine Elasto [music] Painter in the PBA.
Although his physical activity is limited due to a back injury, this has not prevented him from continuing to show his talent in guiding his team.
